Howey-Gauge Poll finds little support for Kernan-Shepard Commission recommendations


A statewide poll of 600 likely voters found little support for the recommendations contained in the Kernan-Shepard Commission. When Hoosiers were asked what proposals, if any, they supported, they responded as follows:

  • Establish a single-person elected county chief executive-7%
  • Eliminate township government-14%
  • Reorganize school districts to achieve a minimum student population of 2,000-12%
  • Require all library and special district budgets to be approved by a county fiscal body-5%
  • Do not support Kernan-Shepard Commission-22%
  • Uncertain-40%

TeleResearch Corporation poll shows majority of registered voters oppose elimination of township government


A statewide poll of 915 registered voters demonstrates that Hoosiers support township government and are opposed to its elimination. When asked, “do you feel that township government should be eliminated,” the responses were:

  • Yes-32%
  • No-53%
  • Undecided-15%
