So much for listening to the will of the people
Despite the fact that voters supported their local township assessors in numerous townships throughout the State, Kevin Brinegar and the Indiana Chamber don’t seem to care. From a recent column in the Evansville Courier & Press:
Kevin Brinegar, president of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, said the business group again will lobby the Legislature in 2009 to eliminate the rest of township-level government. Specifically, it will seek to have the 13 remaining township assessors who survived the referendum abolished by statute.
Oh, and don’t let the Chamber fool you when they characterize the latest referendum results as “overwhelming” support for doing away with local elected officials. Despite the large sums of money they spent on the effort, nearly 1/3 of the township assessors will remain in office.

Firefighters and trustees working together in Elkhart County
Concerned about losing local autonomy and questioning the savings that would come from consolidation, firefighters and trustees in Elkhart County are coming together to educate taxpayers on how the Kernan-Shepard Commission affects them.
